82 Foot Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Cut Down; Journey to New York Begins

82 feet. That is the height of this year's Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

It was cut down yesterday and started its trip to New York City. The tree is a tradition that dates back to 1933, when construction workers erected a 20-foot tree as a symbol of hope during the Great Depression.

The tree lighting is one of New York City's most iconic Christmas traditions.

Every year, thousands of people come to Rockefeller Center to watch as the giant Christmas tree is lit up with tens of thousands of twinkling lights.

The event is always a spectacular sight, and it's one that never fails to get people into the holiday spirit.

Since 1997, the lighting ceremony has been broadcast live on NBC in the first hour of primetime, live in the Eastern and Central time zones, and on tape elsewhere.
